Ferdinand de Lesseps (1805-1894), znany z budowy Kanału Sueskiego, kierował próbami budowy Kanału Panamskiego w latach 1880-1893. Błędy techniczne, problemy finansowe oraz malaria i żółta febra spowodowały niepowodzenie projektu.
