(en) The colony of German New Guinea, subordinate to the German Reich since 1899, was occupied by the Australians in 1914. For the transition period, the Australians produced a kind of emergency money, the Treasury Notes. They were denominated in marks because the currency had already been introduced in New Guinea. In addition, the remaining wages of the German volunteers who surrendered were paid out. The primitively produced notes are among the rarest banknotes in the world today. Only a few copies have survived. A complete set of all denominations with the control number 1 is in the possession of the HVB Stiftung Geldscheinsammlung.
