Jan Fryderyk I "wielkoduszny", elektor Saksonii i przywódca Ligi Schmalkaldzkiej był sprzymierzony z Filipem I "wielkodusznym", landgrafem Hesji podczas wojny schmalkaldzkiej. Zostali pokonani w bitwie pod Mühlbergiem 24 kwietnia 1547 r., a Jan Fryderyk został schwytany i zmuszony do oddania elektoratu Saksonii lub stracony w wyniku kapitulacji w Wittenberdze.
