The "Peso del Sitio" was the first and only silver coin minted in Uruguay, the first silver coin in the Rio Plata region, and the last siege coin in Latin America. The "Peso del Sitio" was the first and only silver coin minted in Uruguay. As the city was under siege, the silver was provided by citizens and thus is the reason for the short mintage.

Also was the first coin bearing the National coat of arms on the obverse, and shows a circle of 9 5-pointed stars, symbolizing the 9 departments of the current division of the country.

Medal alignment version is more scarce than the coin version.
