W 1688 r. cena złota i srebra wzrosła o 20% i nie było czasu na wycofanie i wybicie nowych monet obiegowych. Dlatego na mocy ustawy z 4 sierpnia 1688 r. wartość srebrnych i złotych monet w obiegu została zwiększona o 20%. Jednak nawet około 150 lat później nominały monet pozostały niezmienione, a monety obiegowe miały wartość o około 20% wyższą od wartości nominalnej. W związku z tym wartość 400 réis oznaczona na tym typie oznaczała, że w obiegu będzie on miał wartość 480 réis.
