Eight of the nine Irish commercial banks issued Consolidated Bank Notes after the currency in Ireland was split between the Irish Free State and Northern Ireland in 1929 as a result of Irish independence in 1922. Six of these banks also issued Northern Ireland banknotes.

The Hibernian Bank was one of two banks which did not issue notes in Northern Ireland, the other being the Royal Bank of Ireland.
