Justo Rufino Barrios Auyón (19 July 1835–2 April 1885) was a general and president of Guatemala who rose to power by leading a coup against the conservative government. As president, he formally separated church and state, established obligatory primary schools, and brutally repressed the lower classes. He died in El Salvador trying to revive the Central American Union by force of arms.
