Unauthorised Issues (P#16)

In 1998, Bahrain faced a significant counterfeit currency issue involving the 20-dinar note. A confidence trick orchestrated by individuals posing as representatives of the Bank of Bahrain led to the unauthorized printing of these banknotes by an Argentinian security printer.

The ‘counterfeit’ banknotes were introduced into circulation in June 1998, alongside legitimate 20-dinar notes with new security features such as holograms and wider, micro-printed security threads.

The forgeries were discovered when a considerable amount of the counterfeit banknotes entered circulation, triggering suspicions due to differences from genuine banknotes.

The Bahrain Monetary Agency issued press releases warning of the counterfeit notes and specified identifying features, such as gaps in Arabic letters and variations in decoration. Despite efforts to limit losses, the counterfeit notes circulated for a short period, coexisting with the legitimate 1998 issue.

To address the situation, Bahrain swiftly withdrew all 20-dinar notes in July 1998. A new peach-colored 20-dinar note was introduced on August 1, 1998, featuring the hologram and other security measures.
