W dniu 1 stycznia 2016 r. wszystkie stare banknoty erytrejskiej Nakfy sprzed 24.05.2015 r. (z wyjątkiem banknotu 100 Nakfa z 24.5.2011 r.) zostały zdemonetyzowane i mają jedynie wartość kolekcjonerską. Stare banknoty można było wymienić w banku w ciągu pierwszych sześciu tygodni od demonetyzacji.

Pod światło można odczytać pasek zabezpieczający. Widnieje na nim napis "BANK OF ERITREA":
