198a: Watermark - head of Aphrodite
198b: Watermark - head of the Antikythera Ephebe
 

To tell the variants apart, the head of Aphrodite has her hair in a knot at the top of her head, whereas the head of the Antikythera Ephebe will not.

Another method to tell which variant you have is that notes from P#198a are from prefixes starting with 01 only, with serial numbers up to 860000. Notes from prefixes starting with 01 but with a serial number higher than 860000 will have the watermark of P#198b, as well as all prefixes starting with 02 or higher.

There are two watermark variants because the Bank of Greece had leftover paper stock from the 1,000 Drachmai note from 1956 (P#194), which had a watermark of the head of Aphrodite. Once this paper was used up, they switched to the new paper stock with a watermark of the Antikythera Ephebe.
