Comments

(en) In contrast to other German states, Bavaria did not issue state paper money to clean up debts. The state paper money of 1866 is an exception. The Bavarian state decided to issue state paper money to finance the construction of the railway and the war against Prussia. The Bavarian state government was authorized by the law of 4 September 1866 to issue non-interest-bearing cash orders. Under the supervision of the state parliament, the royal debt repayment commission issued pieces of two, five and fifty guldens. These cash orders were considered legal tender and had to be accepted by the state treasury for payments. Upon request, they had to be exchanged for silver coins. After the establishment of the German Reich, the state paper money was withdrawn during the currency reform.
