W 1740 r. zmarł Święty Cesarz Rzymski Karol VI, co spowodowało problem z sukcesją w HRE. Do czasu zaakceptowania Marii Teresy jako nowego władcy HRE Fryderyk August II rządził Saksonią jako zastępca (vicarius) cesarza.
