Podboje na początku panowania Ludwika XIV cofnęły granice królestwa, a król, pamiętając opór miasta podczas Frondy i chcąc upiększyć i rozszerzyć stolicę, przyjął propozycję Colberta, aby zrównać z ziemią fortyfikacje i zbudować duże aleje.
