W 1869 r. Gwatemala podjęła próbę przyjęcia standardów łacińskiej jednostki monetarnej. W tym celu peso gwatemalskie zostało ustalone na 25 gramów srebra o próbie 900. Monetą pomocniczą było srebro .825.
Z powodu "rewolucji liberalnej" Gwatemala wystąpiła z Łacińskiej Unii Monetarnej w 1871 roku. Ponownie wprowadzono system realny, a peso zdefiniowano jako 25,4 grama srebra o próbie 900.
