Wyznanie wiary z Augsburga zostało napisane przez Philippa Melanchtona na dietę w Augsburgu w 1530 roku na prośbę Karola V i miało być tekstem jednoczącym w celu osiągnięcia porozumienia z książętami katolickimi. Opierał się na Piśmie Świętym i pierwszych wiekach tradycji kościelnej, ale wyrażał także poglądy teologiczne Lutra. Odrzucony przez katolickich książąt, miał stać się luterańskim wyznaniem wiary już w 1555 roku.
