Ravensberg was first mentioned in the 12th century; its seat was Castle Ravensberg. The Counts of Ravensberg then built Sparrenberg Castle in Bielefeld around 1240–50, where they transferred their court. They also owned the castle of Limberg, near Preußisch Oldendorf.
After the War of Succession from Jülich, by the Treaty of Xanten (1614), the County of Ravensberg was assigned to the Brandenburg Mark, which became the Kingdom of Prussia in 1701, being administered under the province of Minden-Ravensberg from 1719 to 1807, the year it was dissolved during the Napoleonic Wars.
In addition to Bielefeld, other Ravensberg County communities were Borgholzhausen, Halle, Steinhagen, Versmold, Werther, Isselhorst (now part of Gütersloh), Enger, Hiddenhausen, Rödinghausen, Spenge, Herford (except for Falkendiek), Bünde (except for Dünne and Spradow), Vlotho (except for Uffeln), Kirchlengern south of the river Werre, Preußisch Oldendorf (except for Hedem and Lashorst) and Bad Oeynhausen south of the Werre.
