The American Medallion Corporation (AMC) was a private minting company in the United States, prolific with the production of silver art rounds during the 1980s and early 1990s. Among these were reproductions of bullion coins known as the Silvers 'Round the World series, including the Canadian Maple Leaf, the Australian Koala and the Chinese Giant Panda. The rounds featuring the Pandas were issued in several designs, struck in both one-ounce and two-ounce, with some being dated and other undated.
For this particular design, AMC issued them between 1983 and 1993 totally five distinct variations. The main images above represent the second Panda issued in 1987. For that year, the year of issue is above the map on the obverse. This follows the first Panda which was undated and reportedly was issued in 1983. Design is the same as the second, with no date above the map on the obverse.
First Panda (undated, probably issued 1983)
The first and second Pandas were followed by another three released between 1991 and 1993. The design on the observe was slightly changed with a star on the map indicating the location of the capital city Beijing. The mintmark AMC is omitted on these rounds. The design of the Panda on the reverse is unchanged although it is now set on a frosted (matt) background. Flanking the Panda along the border is the year of issue, split in two double-numbers.
Third 1991 Panda
Fourth 1992 Panda
Fifth 1993 Panda (final issue)
