W Attleboro, Massachusetts, firma H. M. & E.I. Richards, kontrolowana przez dwóch kuzynów, Henry'ego Manninga Richardsa i E. Irę Richardsa, produkowała szeroką gamę żetonów Hard Times. Low przypisuje początki firmy ojcu Iry, również o imieniu Ira Richards, który rozpoczął produkcję biżuterii w Attleboro około 1815 roku. Dwaj kuzyni byli przez niego zatrudnieni do 1830 roku, kiedy to powstała firma H. M. & E. I. Richards. Firma została później rozwiązana, a w 1837 roku H. M. Richards wyjechał do Filadelfii, gdzie kontynuował produkcję artykułów jubilerskich.
